Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie coming this October: Report

Filled under: ,

Android lovers are forever looking forward to the next version of the operating system. Most people were expecting Google to announce the same at the its developers conference, Google I/O, earlier this year. With that done and dusted, the question still remains what will be the next version of operating system - Android 4.3 or Android 5.0 - and, more importantly, when this update be released.
A news report by vr-zone.com suggests that Google will be unveiling the next Android version sometime in late October. The report also goes on to claim that it will indeed be Android 5.0, which is also referred as Key Lime Pie.
It is being touted that Motorola will be unveiling its mysterious "X" smartphone around the same time.
This is not the first time that we are hearing rumours of this sort. Earlier in the month of April, a news report claimed that Motorola X smartphone has made an appearance on the AnTuTu Benchmark results. This report also mentioned that the smartphone caught in the benchmark was running on Android 5.0.1.
As far as Google in concerned, the Internet search giant too had adopted a similar strategy when it rolled out Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The new version of the software was launched in November 2011 along with a new device Galaxy Nexus. So it will not come as a surprise if the company follows the same strategy even this year for Android Key Lime Pie.
Furthermore, vr-zone.com claims that Android 5.0 is likely to be heavily optimised and will be able to run on smartphones that have just 512MB of RAM. If this bit of information is indeed true, then it will help the company in tapping the lower-end of the market in a much effective manner.
However, from this report is not clear if in the meantime Google may decide to rollout another update in the form of Android 4.3.

Amazon Finally In India

Filled under:

After wetting their feet with Junglee.com for a year, Amazon India with the official URL www.amazon.in finally launches here in the country. Unlike Junglee which is an online shop aggregator, Amazon India guarantees to fulfil orders themselves.
Currently you can buy books, movies, and TV shows on the website with electronic items such as mobiles, cameras, etc promised to be added later on. Expect Amazon India to pretty much play like a standard online shop till they are set, but the fun would surely begin with Amazon offering their US catalogue with items such as Superman Iconic Statue from DC Collectibles (drool) or Star Wars Force FX Lightsabers (double drool) at competing rates here in India.
Free Home Delivery is offered on products above Rs 500 only, anything below that mark will cost you Rs.49 per package for delivery. Though for a “limited time”, Amazon has waived that fee off. Interestingly, if you compare some of the rates of books say 'Stay Hungry Stay Foolish by Rashmi Bansal' on Amazon India and Flipkart; you'll find it cheaper especially since there is no home delivery charge (at the moment).
Also in typical Amazon style, expect your user logins for Amazon.com (US based) to work on Amazon India too. You just got to love Amazon for getting things right!

Facebook Virus Zeus Devours Bank Accounts

Filled under:

Facebook users have something to worry about as the social network has been affected by a Trojan horse named Zeus, as per Symantec, which identifies it as Trojan.Zbot. This virus is known to drain bank accounts and the bad thing is that it has been thriving on FB since the past six years. Zeus propagates through phishing messages that originate from an account that has been phished. Such a phished account will then start automatically sending messages to friends with links to ads telling them to check out a video or product. Of course, you should not click as doing so will get your account phished as well.

The virus lays in wait on the infected computer and springs into action once it detects an online banking transaction in progress. It then stores the user's login and password, which is then used by its creator to empty your bank account. Apparently, this has been managed by a group of cybercriminals known as Russian Business Network who are also involved in child pornography, identity theft, and other illegal activities. The virus was first discovered in 2007 and unfortunately is still going strong. Facebook has been aware of the issue but seems to have done little to get rid of Zeus, as per Eric Feinberg of Fans Against Kounterfeit Enterprise (FAKE).

As per its geographical distribution, the virus has badly affected USA and UK, and has moderately affected India, Russia, Canada, and France. Countries such as Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia, and a few more European and South-East Asian countries are less affected. Facebook shares jump as brokers say usage concerns overblown

Filled under:

Shares of Facebook Inc jumped 5.6 percent on Thursday after two investment brokerages upgraded their recommendations, arguing that concerns over the waning engagement of younger users were overblown.
Still, the share price of the world's largest social network is at a six-month low, partly due to fears that young users were beginning to cool their activities on Facebook, in favor of newer services like Twitter and the increasingly popular photo messaging application, SnapChat.
In midday trading, shares were up at $24.63.
Jefferies & Co and BMO Capital upgraded the stock to buy and outperform, respectively. Their analysts argued that user growth may have leveled off as Facebook gained scale, but it remained the most popular social media service and upcoming products - such as higher-margin video ads - may accelerate revenue growth.
"While MAU's (monthly active users) have somewhat plateaued due to the law of large numbers, we think there is room for financial upside as we expect marketers will find Facebook's 1B+ users irresistible despite any incremental changes in teen usage habits," Jefferies analyst Brian Pitz wrote in a research note.
